Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 Leaves Truck Driver Dead

On January 15, around 1:15 PM, Analoliy Baranovich, 48, of Gresham, Ohio, was traveling Northbound on I-95 in a white Volvo semi truck and trailer. Baranovich did not slow for traffic congestion just south of the Street Road exit and struck the rear-end of a white Nissan Murano in the right lane, Lehigh Valley Live reports. The impact forced the Murano driver, Thomas Lewis, to hit a black Infiniti I30, driven by John Strachan, who then hit a Honda Accord was driven by Keisha Cooper and a Nissan Altima driven by Emily Matusz. Baranovich’s semi truck ended up across the left and center lanes of the highway.

Only a few moments later, Paul Mirys, 58, was driving a black Mack semi truck and trailer in the center lane when he came upon the wreck. Mirys, a longtime employee of Sims Metal Management, was delivering metal scraps to the company’s facility in Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Mirys swerved to avoid the multi-vehicle crash, but his tractor-trailer hit the concrete guardrail. Mirys’ truck flipped, causing scattering scrap metal across the highway; he was pronounced dead at the scene. “Paul was a long-time employee of the company,” Sims Metal stated. “We are all in shock over this tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to everyone affected. Safety is always our number one priority at Sims, and we take every incident of this nature very seriously.”

Northbound traffic was redirected to the Academy Road exit in Philadelphia; congestion continued for nearly 9 hours until I-95 fully reopened–around 11:00 PM. The multi-vehicle crash remains under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, a decision on possible criminal charges will be made.
