Traveling Radar System For Work Zones In Pennsylvania

Beginning next week, Pennsylvania will begin the rollout of its new radar for work zone speeders. These systems will be sent to areas where construction work is being done and workers are present in those locations. The hope is to cut down on work zone area crashes and make it safer for road construction on state highways. Through this program, the state is urging motorists to slow down in order to save lives.

Pre-Penalty Phase

In about one week, the state will start the pilot phase of this program and begin to roll out vehicles to work zones. In this pre-penalty phase, officials will be looking to test the radar technology and make sure that it is working properly. This will also allow them to roll out their first vehicle, with additional vehicles to follow in the coming weeks.

What To Expect from New Mobile Radar System

According to an article regarding the new work zone speed enforcement, tickets will only be issued for anyone who is traveling in excess of 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. For your first infraction, you will receive a warning letter and then subsequent fines that range from $75 to $150 for each additional infraction. Each fine will be mailed to the registered owner at the address on file. However, there will be no points added to anyone’s driver’s license when fined.

What This Means

Pennsylvania is trying to keep its road workers safe by creating a less hazardous work environment. With more than 1,800 deaths in work zone areas in 2018 according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, it is important to understand that one mistake can cost someone his/her life. This is a bold move for Pennsylvania to try and cut down on these tragedies and create a better and safer environment for those who work in it. For you, the driver, it means you need to take additional precautions in these areas because the new policy can be rolled out to any location at any time.

We all dislike traffic caused by road work because it keeps us from getting to our destinations quicker. However, when we are in work zones, we need to take extra care for those around us and slow down in order to make sure that we pass through the zone safely. Give yourself a little added time, especially if you know that you will be traveling through a road construction zone. It’s likely this new system won’t be going away any time soon, and more units will probably continue to roll out as the results come in from this initial phase.
